Why are Jazz Musicians Pretentious?

Nov 24 · 4 min read

Jazz musicians are known for being pretentious. In fact, many people think that the whole genre of jazz is pretentious. But why? Jazz music has a long and rich history and has been around for over 100 years. People who play this type of music typically have high levels of skill, which leads them to feel like they're better than others. They also put in a lot of hard work practicing so much that they become very emotional about it all.

It comes from the style of music being played

The style of music that jazz musicians play requires great skill, so it's no surprise that they are good at what they do. As a result, jazz musicians tend to be more skilled than other musicians and may even appear pretentious because of their love of the music and their ability to play it well.

Jazz musicians tend to have a very high amount of skill

As you might have guessed, good jazz musicians have to be very skilled at many things. First off, reading music. The ability to read and understand notated music is essential for playing jazz (and many other genres). In addition to this, jazz musicians need a large amount of improvisational skill. It's impossible to play a solo without improvising! Finally, being able to play in a group setting is an important part of being a good jazz musician—it's key that the other musicians know how their parts fit into the overall musical structure and how they should interact with each other during performances.

As you can see from these three examples alone (reading music, improvising solos and playing in groups), being good at all four components mentioned above requires quite a bit of training and practice over time before someone could be considered truly "good" at performing any one aspect on its own by itself let alone all four simultaneously! This means that most people who decide they want.

Jazz musicians have to practice a lot and are very hard working

The reason why jazz musicians are pretentious is because they have to practice a lot and are very hard working. Does this mean that all jazz musicians are pretentious? No, but most of them are. Jazz musicians work very hard at their music because it takes talent, practice, and dedication to play good music. They also don't have the same amount of time as other musicians do because they don't always have money for lessons or instruments with which to learn how to play an instrument. What makes this worse is that whenever someone does something wrong in a band (like miss a note) everyone else will get mad at them for messing up!

Jazz musicians are very emotional and that causes them to be pretentious

As a jazz musician, you are more likely to be pretentious than your peers. In fact, it's probably safe to say that most jazz musicians are pretentious. Jazz musicians tend to be highly sensitive people and very emotional as well. In addition, many of them also suffer from mental illness and addiction issues. As a result of this combination of factors, the average jazz musician is much more likely than other musicians (and non-musicians) to have narcissistic tendencies or personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder. So what does this mean? It means that when someone tells me they can't stand jazz because they find it self-absorbed and emotionally immature...I just smile and nod my head in agreement because what else am I supposed to do?

They think they're better than others because they practice so hard

When you have a certain amount of skill, or even just experience, it can be easy to feel like you're better than others. When you get into music school and spend countless hours sitting in front of your instrument every day for years, it's easy to think that no one else is working as hard as you are.

When this happens in jazz musicians, it's not necessarily because they think less of other musicians (though some do). It's more likely because jazz musicians tend to be perfectionists who want their playing to sound good all the time—and since there are so many variables involved with making music sound how someone wants it to sound, there's always room for improvement.

Jazz musicians put in a lot of hard work so they get pretentious

There are many reasons why jazz musicians may seem pretentious. One is that jazz music requires a lot of study and practice. It's not for the faint of heart or weak-willed, so if you're going to play it, you'd better be ready to put in some serious effort. If you want to make yourself look like an expert on the subject, then putting in those hours will give you an edge over everyone else who doesn't know as much.

Another reason is that jazz musicians are often very hardworking people who care deeply about their craft and want nothing more than to express themselves through it as much as possible—and what better way to do so than by showing off how much digging they've done? They'll do this by spouting facts or dropping names just like any other internalized intellectual would because they think that kind of stuff matters (and sometimes it does).

Finally, when someone practices an art for a long time without getting any recognition from outside sources (like awards), he/she might start feeling like he/she doesn't deserve all the attention coming his/her way because there have been others doing similar things longer but haven't gotten anywhere near as far with them yet due to lack of funding or connections within industry circles; therefore someone must be out there who deserves more applause than anyone else does before anyone else does too...

There are many reasons why jazz musicians might be pretentious, but they all come back to one thing: they're putting in a lot of hard work. They're so focused on their craft that they become blind to everything else around them. It's important not to take this personally though because it doesn't mean anything bad about us as people!
